The Salzkammergut is primarily lake and mountain country. Swimming, boating, hiking, and cycling are the main activities in summer; skiing at the Dachstein is the draw in winter. The salt mines — at Hallstatt, at Altaussee, and at Hallein just outside the region — give the landscape its history.
