Ramsau am Dachstein

Village in the Dachstein foothills, base for the glacier cable car and cross-country skiing

Ramsau am Dachstein sits on a high plateau above Schladming, at about 1,100 metres, with spectacular views of the Dachstein massif from across the valley. It is the base station for the cable car to the Dachstein Glacier and one of Austria's best cross-country skiing centres — the plateau's flat terrain and reliable snow conditions make it ideal for classic and skate skiing, and the course network is extensive.

In summer, Ramsau functions as a hiking base. The plateau has a network of marked trails, and the walk to the Dachstein base is straightforward. The village has a few good hotels and restaurants, and the drive up from Schladming — about 15 minutes on a winding road — is enjoyable in itself. Ramsau also has a ski-jump facility that has hosted international competitions.
