Hietzing — Vienna's 13th district — is the leafy western neighbourhood that grew up around Schönbrunn Palace. It is residential, prosperous, and quietly elegant, with grand villas, the imperial parks at Schönbrunn and the Lainzer Tiergarten, and a famous Otto Wagner subway pavilion designed exclusively for the emperor's use.
Apart from Schönbrunn itself, the draws are the wooded Lainzer Tiergarten with its wild boar and palace; the Hietzinger Friedhof, where Klimt, Schiele's mother, and many Habsburg-era figures are buried; and a small core of pleasant cafés and restaurants around the U4 station. A quiet and atmospheric district for half a day's wandering once you have done Schönbrunn.
