Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn was the Habsburgs' summer palace and the symbol of their dynasty for three centuries. A vast baroque-rococo complex on the western edge of Vienna, it has 1,441 rooms (only a fraction are open) and gardens that climb a hill to the Gloriette pavilion, with the city laid out below.

The Grand Tour of 40 state rooms covers the public apartments and the most ornate private ones — Mirrors Hall, the Vieux-Laque Room, the Million Room. The gardens are free and worth a couple of hours: the Palm House, the Neptune Fountain, the maze, and the Schönbrunn Zoo, which is the oldest in the world. UNESCO World Heritage Site. U-Bahn: Schönbrunn (U4).

A story
Schönbrunn has 1,441 rooms and was built as the Habsburgs' summer residence to outdo Versailles. Empress Maria Theresa raised sixteen children here, Mozart performed in the Hall of Mirrors at age six, and the world's oldest zoo still operates in the gardens — founded in 1752 as a private menagerie for the imperial family.
