Museum der Stadt Villach

The Museum der Stadt Villach (City Museum of Villach) is housed in a Renaissance building in the old town and covers the history of the city and the wider Carinthian region from Roman times through the modern era. The collection includes Roman finds from the nearby settlement of Santicum, medieval artefacts, local crafts, and exhibits on the city's role as a trade and transit hub.

The display on the 1348 earthquake — still one of the most powerful seismic events in documented Alpine history — is particularly good, explaining the geological context and the scale of the destruction with original source material. The museum is compact enough to be done thoroughly in two hours and serves as a useful orientation before exploring the old town on foot. A model of the historic city in the 16th century gives a clear picture of how Villach looked when it was a major commercial centre on the routes between Venice and the northern Habsburg lands.

A story
The museum holds a large relief model of Carinthia created in the early 19th century — a painstaking physical representation of the province's topography at a scale of 1:10,000. At the time it was made, such models were rare and genuinely useful for planning roads and military movements; today it stands as an extraordinary object in its own right, showing how the landscape was understood and mapped before the age of aerial photography.
