The Kunstmeile Krems is the city's art mile, running through the former industrial and riverside quarter toward Stein. Its strongest anchor is the Kunsthalle Krems, a contemporary art space in a former tobacco factory, but the district also includes the State Gallery of Lower Austria, the Caricature Museum, Forum Frohner, and smaller venues.
This gives Krems more cultural weight than most Wachau towns. It is easy to spend half a day here, especially in poor weather, then walk back into the old centre for wine and dinner.
