Hinterhaus Castle is the ruined stronghold above Spitz, set on a rocky ridge at the edge of the Jauerling. The castle began in the 12th century and was later held and expanded by the Knights of Spitz, whose name still follows the village.
Come mainly for the climb and the view. From the walls you can see the Danube bend, the village roofs, and the steep vineyard terraces that make this part of the Wachau so good.
