Spitz is a wine village in the middle of the Wachau, a little larger and more lived-in than Dürnstein and less dominated by day-trip crowds. The Danube runs below the village, vineyards climb above it, and the broken walls of Hinterhaus Castle watch over the valley from the ridge.
The village sits below the Tausendeimerberg, the "Thousand-Bucket Hill", one of the Wachau's best-known vineyards. Local wine taverns pour Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from the surrounding terraces, and the Maritime Museum adds the river story: wooden boats, Danube trade, and the work that kept the valley connected before motors and highways.
Spitz is easy to visit by bike, boat, train, or car, and it makes a good slower counterpoint to Dürnstein. Climb to the castle ruins, look into the fortified parish church, then settle into a Heuriger rather than rushing straight back onto the road.
