The medieval fortress of Alinjagala crowns a steep rocky mountain on the right bank of the Alinjaçay river in Julfa district, about 12 kilometres north of the town. At over 1800 metres above sea level, the castle commands a sweeping view across the Araz valley into Iran. Defensive walls, towers, and the remnants of cisterns, storage chambers, and a royal residence still stand in reasonable condition given the site's age.
The climb to the summit takes around an hour from the base and requires some scrambling over loose rock — but the views and the sense of history make it worthwhile. On a clear day you can see deep into Iran across the river. The fortress was occupied continuously from the early medieval period through the Mongol invasions and beyond, serving as one of the last refuges of the Nakhchivan khans.
