Nakhchivan's exclave geography has left it relatively undiscovered, which means most of its historical sites see very few foreign visitors. The region has been settled for millennia — it sits on the ancient Silk Road corridor, and the concentration of tombs, caravanserais, mosques, and sacred sites is remarkable for an area of its size.
The pilgrimage cave at Ashabi-Kahf, the petroglyphs on the volcanic peak of Gamigaya, the medieval Momine Khatum tomb tower, and the remains of the Gulustan caravanserai on the Araks River are all within a day's reach of Nakhchivan city. The best approach is to hire a car and driver in the city — public transport to most of these sites is limited or nonexistent — and combine several sites in a single day.
