Carpet Bazaar

The bazaar near the bus station is the place to see Quba carpets in their natural habitat — piled up in the stalls of dealers who can often trace the provenance of individual pieces to specific villages in the district. Quba-style carpets are distinguished by their geometric medallion patterns and vivid use of red, blue, and ivory. They are among the most technically refined in Azerbaijan, with knot counts that rival the finest pieces from the weaving centres of Iran.

If you are thinking of buying, allow time to look at several stalls, ask questions, and understand what you are seeing. Prices vary enormously depending on age, provenance, and knot density. Dealers are generally honest but know that antique pieces and new pieces can look superficially similar to an untrained eye.
