Shahdag Mountain Resort

Shahdag Mountain Resort sits at around 1,800 metres in the Greater Caucasus range, about 29km from Qusar town along the Laza road. It opened in 2012 as Azerbaijan's first purpose-built ski resort and now offers 12 ski runs, several chairlifts, and a cluster of hotels and restaurants. The skiing is best between December and March; snowfall is generally reliable at altitude, and the runs range from gentle nursery slopes to steeper descents suited to intermediate skiers.

In summer, the resort pivots to hiking, mountain biking, and a zip line. The alpine setting — with views across the Caucasus ridgeline toward Russia — is the main attraction regardless of season. Two hotels operate year-round: the Park Chalet and the Pik Palace, both part of the Marriott Autograph Collection. Day visitors can access the chairlifts for a nominal fee, and the restaurant terrace has views that justify the trip even without skiing or hiking.

A story
Shahdag was Azerbaijan's first major international ski resort, opened in 2012 as part of the government's push to diversify the economy beyond oil. The resort was built rapidly on slopes that had never seen organised skiing — engineers had to create the ski runs, hotels, and infrastructure from scratch in the Greater Caucasus mountains. For Baku weekenders making the two-hour drive, it represents something genuinely unexpected: high-quality Alpine skiing in a Caucasian country.
