When to Go

Qusar has two distinct tourist seasons determined almost entirely by the mountain setting.

Winter (December–March): The ski season at Shahdag resort, which sits at 1,800 metres, operates reliably during this period. Qusar town itself rarely sees heavy snow, but the mountain road to Laza can become impassable after storms. Book resort accommodation well in advance at weekends and during Azerbaijani public holidays.

Summer (June–September): The mountains are cool and green when Baku is hot and humid. Hikers, families, and anyone seeking escape from the Caspian summer heat make the drive up. The Laza valley is at its most beautiful in July and August. Spring (April–May) brings the waterfalls to maximum flow but the upper mountain road can still be muddy.

Shoulder months (October, November): The mountains are quiet, accommodation is cheap, and the autumn foliage in the beech forests is spectacular. A good time for independent travellers who want the landscape without the crowds.
