The Gusarchai (Qusar River) cuts through the Greater Caucasus range in a series of gorges above the town, and the upper reaches of the river produce several waterfalls that are accessible on foot from the Laza road. The most visited fall drops through a narrow basalt canyon about 20km from Qusar; a short trail from a roadside parking area leads to the base of the fall in 20–30 minutes. The surrounding forest of beech and hornbeam is particularly beautiful in autumn when the foliage turns yellow and orange.
The waterfalls are most dramatic in spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the river. By August the flow diminishes but the setting remains pleasant and the temperatures at altitude are comfortable when Baku is roasting. The gorge can be combined with a visit to the Laza valley and the Shahdag resort on a single day's drive from Qusar town.
