Nemiga Street

A pedestrian shopping street over the buried river of the same name — and the site of a famous medieval battle

Nemiga is both a street and a neighbourhood in Minsk, centred on the pedestrian precinct near the Nemiga metro station. The area is one of the oldest-settled parts of the city — Minsk was founded at the confluence of two rivers, the Svislach and the now-buried Nyamiha, and this neighbourhood sits at that ancient junction.

Today it is primarily a commercial and residential district with covered shopping malls, markets, and the everyday bustle of a lived-in urban neighbourhood. It is less polished than the main tourist areas around October Square and the old town, which makes it more interesting in some ways: this is where ordinary Minskers do their grocery shopping and go about their daily lives.

The area is also the starting point for walking to the Troitsky Predmestye old town and the Isle of Tears memorial, both a short walk north along the Svislach.

A story
The Nyamiha River was one of two rivers on which Minsk was founded in the 11th century. In 1067 a fierce battle was fought here between the forces of several Rus' princes — the bloodiest conflict of the civil wars that tore apart the early Rus' state. The river that witnessed it was later buried in a culvert and eventually built over entirely. Today the metro station below carries the old name, and a small memorial in the pedestrian precinct marks the site of the battle and the 1999 stampede at an outdoor concert that killed 53 people.
