Buinichi Field

Buinichi Field is the main wartime memorial outside Mogilev, set south of the city near the road to Bobruisk. It commemorates the defence of Mogilev in July 1941, when the city became one of the early battlefields of the German invasion of the Soviet Union.

The memorial is solemn rather than subtle, in the Belarusian Great Patriotic War tradition. It is worth the trip if you want to understand the city's memory landscape, but it needs context; read up before going or visit with a guide.

A story
The 1941 defence of Mogilev became one of the city's central wartime memories. Soviet troops and local defenders slowed the German advance here, and the memorial opened in 1995 to mark that sacrifice.
