Belarus has a population of around 9.4 million (2024 estimate), having declined steadily since independence due to emigration and a low birth rate. The emigration accelerated sharply after the 2020 election crisis, when hundreds of thousands of Belarusians left — many of them young, educated, and politically active.

Belarusians are predominantly East Slavic. The largest minority groups are Russians (around 8%), Poles (around 3%), and Ukrainians. There are smaller Jewish and Roma communities. Poles are concentrated in the Grodno region near the Polish border, and the area retains a distinctly different cultural flavour.

The dominant religion is Eastern Orthodox Christianity, with a significant Roman Catholic minority concentrated in the west of the country. Relations between the two communities are generally cordial. Religious observance has increased since independence, and churches — many of them beautifully restored — are central to civic life.

Both Belarusian and Russian are official languages, but Russian dominates in everyday urban life. Belarusian is more widely spoken in rural areas and has experienced a cultural revival among younger, often opposition-minded Belarusians who see the language as a marker of national identity. Speaking even a few words of Belarusian is appreciated, particularly outside the capital.

Belarusians tend to be reserved with strangers but warm once acquaintance is established. Hospitality is taken seriously — being invited to someone's home is a genuine honour. The country's traumatic history — the near-total destruction of the Jewish population in World War II, the mass graves at Kuropaty, the disaster at Chernobyl — shapes a collective memory that coexists uneasily with the regime's heavily managed version of the past.

The 2020 presidential election and its aftermath fractured society. Many Belarusians opposed Lukashenko's claimed victory and participated in mass protests; many others, particularly older and rural populations, either supported the regime or kept their heads down. Those divisions remain raw.
