Ezelpoort, the Donkey's Gate, is one of the surviving gates from Bruges's medieval rampart system. The lower brickwork goes back to the city's second ring of walls, begun in the late 13th century, though the gate was rebuilt and altered several times as Bruges's defences changed.
It sits northwest of the centre, so it feels calmer than the Markt, Burg, and most canal viewpoints. The gate is best folded into a walk along the green ramparts and waterways: not a blockbuster, but a handsome reminder that Bruges was a fortified trading city before it became a museum-like old town.
