Bruges is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, and almost everything worth seeing is within that walk. The essential sights are the Markt and the Belfort, the adjoining Burg with its basilica and town hall, the Groeningemuseum and Sint-Janshospitaal for Flemish Primitives, and the Begijnhof for a quiet breather. Beyond the greatest hits, wander the canal walks north and east of the centre — the Sint-Anna quarter around the Jerusalem Church and the Lace Centre is particularly pretty, and has fewer tourists. Boat trips on the canals (30 minutes, a few euro, departures from half a dozen landing stages) are cheesy but genuinely rewarding: the views from water level are the best in the city. For something longer, the historic Lamme Goedzak canal boat runs the five kilometres from Bruges to the village of Damme — a pleasant half-day excursion through flat polder landscape.
