Kruispoort is one of Bruges' surviving medieval city gates, standing on the eastern edge of the old town where the ramparts are greener and calmer than the market-square core. Its brick towers and pointed arch make a satisfying contrast to the canals and stepped gables most visitors come for.
The gate works best as part of a walk along the old defensive line, especially if you continue toward the windmills on the Kruisvest. It is not a long visit, but it shows Bruges as a fortified city rather than only a pretty museum town. Come in the morning or late afternoon for softer light on the brickwork.
