Sundial Park (Zonnewijzerpark)

A collection of sundials including the world's first digital sundial, in a pleasant public park

Address Europalaan, Genk

The Sundial Park (Zonnewijzerpark) in Genk contains one of the most unusual collections of solar timekeepers in the world — over fifty sundials of different designs, scales, and principles, including what is claimed to be the world's first digital sundial. The digital sundial uses a specially designed grid of slits that casts a shadow showing the time in digital numerals — the numbers are formed by light passing through the grid at specific angles as the sun moves.

The park is a pleasant green space with a genuine curiosity at its center. The sundials range from conventional horizontal and vertical designs to elaborate analemmatic dials and large-scale sculptures. Each has an explanation panel, and the collection as a whole gives a surprisingly comprehensive overview of how humans have measured time using the sun across different cultures and periods.

Free to enter, and a good stop on a cycling route through the city. Located near the European Quarter of Genk, which reflects the city's role as a center for mining companies in the Kempen.
