Château de Freyr

Renaissance château with formal Le Nôtre-style gardens above the Meuse

The Château de Freyr is a handsome Renaissance manor house set in formal gardens on the left bank of the Meuse, between Waulsort and Dinant. The gardens were designed in the style of Le Nôtre — the same landscape architect responsible for Versailles — with clipped hedgerows, geometric parterres, and orange trees that are centuries old. On a clear summer afternoon, the whole ensemble reflected in the Meuse is one of the more striking views in Belgium.

The interior can be visited on guided tours; the château is still in private hands after more than five hundred years with the same family, which gives it an unmistakably lived-in quality. The collection includes tapestries, furniture, and portraits spanning several centuries. Across the river, the Rocks at Freyr form a tall limestone crag popular with climbers.

A story
The Château de Freyr was long a summer retreat of the ruling Beaufort-Spontin family. In 1698, the future King Charles II of Spain visited here, and the gardens were laid out in a formal French style shortly afterward — a miniature Versailles perched above a limestone cliff. The family has owned the property continuously for over 500 years.
