Rocks at Freyr

Dramatic limestone crags above the Meuse — the premier rock climbing site in Belgium

The Rocks at Freyr are a series of imposing limestone cliffs rising from the right bank of the Meuse directly opposite the Château de Freyr. They are the best known rock climbing site in Belgium, with routes of all grades cut into the pale grey rock. The tallest walls reach around 80 metres.

Even if you are not a climber, the Rocks are worth visiting for the views from the top of the plateau, which look down the valley toward Dinant and across to the château and its gardens. A path leads up from the river. The area below the rocks is also a popular picnic spot on summer weekends. Kayak trips on the Meuse pass directly below the crags, which is one of the better ways to appreciate their scale.
