Waulsort Abbey

Ruins of a medieval Benedictine abbey on the banks of the Meuse

Waulsort Abbey was founded by Irish monks in the 10th century at a bend in the Meuse river, later becoming a prosperous Benedictine monastery. Like many Belgian monasteries, it was suppressed during the French Revolutionary period and subsequently converted to other uses; today a château stands on the site incorporating some of the surviving medieval structures.

The village of Waulsort itself is a quiet riverside settlement worth a short walk. The former monastery grounds run down to the river, and there are pleasant views along the Meuse toward the limestone cliffs that characterise this stretch of the valley. It makes a natural stop on a kayak trip between Namur and Dinant.
