Bars and Cafes

Roeselare is Flemish, which means drinking is taken seriously and done well. The default is a glass of Rodenbach — the local sour red-brown ale — which you can get at virtually any cafe in town and which tastes considerably better on its home turf. The Grote Markt terraces are the obvious place to sit, busy on weekend afternoons with locals and cyclists who have ridden the surrounding roads.

For a deeper dive into Belgian beer culture, a visit to the Rodenbach Brewery includes a tasting of the regular and Grand Cru versions — the Grand Cru is aged longer in the oak foeders and is noticeably more complex. The town has a handful of brown cafes (bruine kroegen) in the streets around the market square, comfortable old-fashioned drinking rooms with low lights and a long beer list.
