Grote Markt

Flemish market square rebuilt after WWI with Sint-Michielskerk and cafes

The Grote Markt is Roeselare's central square, lined with cafes and dominated by the Sint-Michielskerk. Like most of the town, it was almost completely destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt in the interwar period. The church tower is the town's landmark, visible from the surrounding flat countryside.

The square is the social centre of town — on Saturday mornings a market fills it with produce stalls. At other times the cafe terraces are pleasant for a coffee or a beer. The KOERS museum faces onto the square, and the streets radiating from it hold the town's shops and restaurants.
