Rumbeke Castle

One of Belgium's oldest Renaissance castles, set in a large wooded park

Rumbeke Castle sits in a large wooded park about 2 km south of the Roeselare centre. The castle itself is one of the oldest Renaissance structures in Belgium, with origins in the 14th century and a handsome 16th-century facade. It is privately owned and cannot usually be visited inside, but the surrounding Sterrebos park is public and excellent for walking.

The park is laid out in a star-shaped pattern of avenues radiating from a central point — a design dating from the 18th century. It is large enough to feel genuinely rural, with old beech trees, ponds, and quiet paths. A good option for a morning walk or a run, and a pleasant contrast to the urban square.

A story
The castle dates from at least the 14th century and was rebuilt in Renaissance style in the 16th century, making it one of the oldest surviving Renaissance buildings in Belgium. It is privately owned but the surrounding Sterrebos park — designed in the shape of a star — is open to the public.
