Salm River Valley

The Salm is a fast-moving river that cuts through classic Ardennes terrain — beech and oak woodland on the valley sides, meadows by the water, and the occasional old stone bridge or mill. The valley around Vielsam is part of a broader network of GR long-distance walking trails that cross the Belgian Ardennes, and several marked day routes follow the river through the most scenic sections. In summer the valley paths are well maintained and the river is low enough to wade at points; in winter, after rain or snow, the Salm runs high and fast.

The valley is also good cycling territory. The gradients along the river are gentle enough for casual cyclists, and the lanes that run parallel to the Salm connect the small villages of the municipality with minimal traffic. If you are using Vielsam as a base for exploring the wider Ardennes, the river valley routes are the most pleasant way to orient yourself to the landscape before heading further into the hills.
