Vielsam's appeal is almost entirely outdoors. The Salm river valley and the surrounding Ardennes hills offer walking trails, cycling routes, and in some winters enough snow for cross-country skiing. The village of Salmchâteau, a few kilometres south, has the ruins that gave the entire area its historical name.
