Vielsam

Small Ardennes municipality in Liège province, surrounded by forested hills and Salm river valleys.

Vielsam is a small municipality in the Belgian Ardennes, in the province of Liège near the border with Luxembourg. The surrounding landscape is classic Ardennes: forested hills, narrow river valleys, and small farms. The Salm river runs through the area, and the village sits at the heart of a region well suited to walking and cycling in summer and cross-country skiing when snow falls in winter.

The town is quiet and largely oriented around the outdoor activities that draw visitors to this part of the Ardennes. It makes a peaceful base for exploring the Belgian High Fens nature reserve to the north and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the south.

Getting There

Vielsam is most easily reached by car. From Liège the drive takes about 75 km via the N66 through the Ardennes, roughly an hour in normal conditions. From Brussels, allow about two hours. Public transport is limited: there is a bus service connecting Vielsam to Trois-Ponts, which is on the Liège–Luxembourg railway line, but services are infrequent and the schedule is worth checking carefully before you rely on it. For most visitors, a car is effectively essential for exploring the area once you arrive.
