The Kastel Fortress is Banja Luka's defining landmark, a medieval-Ottoman fortification perched on a rocky promontory above a bend in the Vrbas River. The walls enclose a large grassy interior used today for outdoor concerts and events, and the riverside position — with the fast, green water of the Vrbas below — makes this one of the more scenic fortress settings in the Balkans.
The fortress has been built and rebuilt across centuries: there is a Roman layer below, an early medieval Bosnian layer, and then the substantial Ottoman reconstruction of the 16th century. The towers and walls are in reasonable condition and you can walk the full circuit along the top of the ramparts. In summer the interior becomes an open-air venue for the Demofest music festival, which draws a young, energetic crowd.
Entry is free. The fortress is a ten-minute walk from the city centre along the riverbank promenade.
