Founded in the 16th century, the Behram-Begova Medresa is the oldest educational institution still in operation in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. A medresa is an Islamic school, and this one was established as part of the same Ottoman-era construction programme that built the mosques and public buildings of Tuzla's historic core.
The building was renovated in the late 20th century and continues to function as an Islamic secondary school. The architecture is a mix of original Ottoman elements and later additions, set around a courtyard. The medresa is close to the centre and can be seen from outside; access to the interior is limited to educational visitors.
