Varosha is Bansko's old quarter — the original town that existed before the gondola, the ski hotels and the apartment blocks. The streets are narrow, cobbled and lined with high stone walls; behind them, two- and three-storey Revival-era houses with overhanging wooden upper floors and stout wooden gates.
The quarter is small enough to wander in a couple of hours. The anchors are Holy Trinity Church and the main square in front of it; the Velyanova House and the Vaptsarov House Museum are both in the same warren of lanes. Several of the town's best mehana taverns are tucked into Varosha courtyards.
