20 April Square

The central square of Koprivshtitsa is named for the date in 1876 when the April Uprising began. It is a small, handsome space — a fountain, a monument, a couple of cafes with outdoor tables, and the painted facades of old merchant houses on three sides. Not grand, but pleasant and human-scaled.

This is the natural place to start or end a visit. The main information office is nearby, the combined museum ticket can be purchased here, and the lanes leading to the six house-museums radiate out in all directions. In summer evenings, after the day-trippers leave, locals gather at the cafe tables and the square recovers the relaxed tempo of a small Bulgarian town that has largely managed to stay itself despite the tourism.
