Benkovski House

The Benkovski House commemorates Georgi Benkovski, one of the principal military leaders of the April 1876 Uprising. Where Kableshkov was the uprising's political organiser, Benkovski was its cavalry commander — a more romantic and ultimately tragic figure who led a mounted band through the Sredna Gora mountains before being caught and killed by Ottoman troops.

The museum focuses on Benkovski's life and the military dimension of the uprising, with weapons, documents, and period artefacts. The house itself is a solid National Revival building on the eastern edge of the town center. It tends to draw fewer visitors than the Oslekov or Kableshkov houses, which makes it one of the more tranquil stops on the museum circuit.

A story
Georgi Benkovski, born Gavril Hristov Gruev, changed his name when he joined the revolutionary underground — a common practice among Bulgarian nationalists in the Ottoman period. He became the most daring military commander of the April Uprising, leading a cavalry detachment through the Sredna Gora on a raid intended to spread the rebellion. He was ambushed and killed in the forests near Teteven six weeks after the uprising began. He was 32.
