Pamporovo

Pamporovo is Bulgaria's southernmost ski resort, set on the Rhodope plateau at around 1,650 metres above sea level. The skiing is modest — the runs are not steep, and the vertical drop is limited — but the resort is well-priced compared to similar facilities in Austria or France, and the combination of good snow, inexpensive lift tickets, and friendly atmosphere makes it popular with British, Czech, and Polish visitors from November to March.

In summer, Pamporovo transforms into a hiking centre. The forested plateau has well-marked trails leading to the nearby peak of Snejanka (1,926m), through beech and spruce forest to viewpoints over the surrounding mountains, and onward toward Shiroka Laka and Smolyan. Mountain biking is also available through resort operators. The ski lifts operate in summer for walkers.

A story
The Snezhanka Tower at Pamporovo — a 156-metre concrete television tower completed in 1979 — has an observation deck at the top with views over the forested plateau towards Greece on clear days. In winter, skiers are towed up to the same summit by chairlift, passing the tower in the mist.
