The Rhodope Mountains reward slow exploration. Hire a car and drive between the gorges, villages, and ski resorts; the roads are good and the landscape constantly changes. The villages in the central Rhodopes contain some of Bulgaria's finest traditional architecture, and the cave systems here — Devil's Throat, Uhlovitsa — are among the most dramatic in the country.
