The heart of Ruse, Freedom Square (Площад Свобода) is lined with 19th-century buildings in a range of European styles — neoclassical, baroque, and early Art Nouveau — that make it unlike any other square in Bulgaria. The centrepiece is the fountain and the Monument to Liberty, erected after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78. The surrounding pedestrian zone extends along Aleksandrovska Street, the main commercial artery, which is pleasant for an evening stroll.
