National Transport Museum

Railway history in Bulgaria's original 1867 train station

Housed in the original 1867 Ruse railway station — the terminus of Bulgaria's first railway line — this museum traces the history of Bulgarian transport from steam engines to early automobiles. The building itself is the attraction as much as the exhibits: a handsome brick structure that has barely changed since it opened. Outside, a collection of vintage locomotives and rolling stock occupies the platform area. Well worth the modest entrance fee.

A story
Bulgaria's first railway line opened in 1867, running from Ruse to Varna — not because Bulgarians planned it, but because a British company wanted to connect the Danube to the Black Sea. The Ruse terminus, where the museum now stands, was built before Bulgaria even existed as an independent state.
