Regional Historical Museum

Strong Roman-era collection in a handsome 19th-century building.

One of the better regional museums in Bulgaria, covering the history of the Ruse area from prehistory through the Roman garrison town of Sexaginta Prista, Byzantine and medieval periods, the Ottoman era, and Bulgarian independence. The Roman section is particularly strong — Ruse sits directly on the Danube limes (frontier) and excavations have yielded substantial finds. The museum occupies a fine 19th-century building near Freedom Square.
