Hambara

A candlelit cellar bar that does not appear to have any official sign — the entrance is an unmarked door on a small lane between Vasil Levski and Tsar Shishman. Inside, vaulted brick rooms with no electric light, only candles, and live jazz several nights a week.

The drinks are limited to wine, rakia, and beer; the conversation is conducted in low voices to match the lighting. It is one of the most atmospheric bars in the Balkans. Cash only, opens at 8pm, closes when the last guests leave.
