Stara Zagora is well connected by rail and road. There are direct trains from Sofia (about 2.5 to 3 hours), and the city lies on the main east-west rail line linking Sofia to Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, and the Black Sea coast. Buses from Sofia, Plovdiv, Kazanlak, and other major cities are frequent. The town has no commercial airport; the nearest is Plovdiv, roughly 110 kilometres to the west. Driving from Sofia takes about 2.5 hours along the A1/E80 motorway.
