Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands ("the Hells") are the long chain of small uninhabited or barely-inhabited islets that lie just offshore from Hvar Town, screening the harbour from the open sea. The name has nothing to do with hellfire — it derives from paklina, the resin once used to caulk wooden ships, which was extracted from the local pine forests.

In summer, water taxis from the Hvar Town quay run to the most popular islets — Jerolim (clothing-optional swimming), Marinkovac (the legendary Carpe Diem Beach Club), and Sveti Klement (the largest, with the secluded inlet of Palmižana and a few good lunch konobas). The water between is clear, deep, and turquoise. Bring a hat, water, and grippy sandals — the shore is sharp rock everywhere.
