Church of St Nicholas

The Church of St Nicholas sits on the waterfront at Komiža and is the town's oldest surviving building, with parts of it dating back to the 13th century. Nicholas is the patron saint of fishermen, and the church's position directly on the harbour gives it an intimate connection with the fishing community that has always defined Komiža.

The church interior is small and atmospheric — darkened by centuries of candle smoke and decorated with ex-voto paintings left by sailors grateful for survival. On St Nicholas Day in December, a medieval ceremony is held where a model boat is ritually burned in the harbour, a tradition maintained continuously since at least the 17th century.
