Museum of the Sinjska Alka

A small but unexpectedly engaging museum opposite the Franciscan monastery, devoted to the Sinjska Alka — the annual jousting tournament that defines the town. Cases hold lances, sabres, embroidered ceremonial costumes, horse trappings, banners, and the iron ring (the alka) that gives the contest its name.

Multimedia displays explain the rules — riders gallop the length of Alka Street and aim a lance through three concentric rings, with three points for the bullseye — and the history of the event since 1715. Worth half an hour even if you visit outside Alka week.

A story
Only men born in Sinj or its hinterland may compete in the Alka. The costumes are passed down within families and can be three centuries old; one full Alkar outfit is said to be worth more than a small house. UNESCO put the tournament on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010.
