Karl Marx Monument

A larger-than-life bust of Karl Marx, erected in 1976 during the Communist period, stands in a town that Marx never visited and that was, in the 19th century, precisely the kind of luxury resort where the European bourgeoisie went to rest and recover. The monument is still here, decades after the regime that installed it collapsed, now coexisting with the luxury spas and Mercedes-Benz dealerships that characterise the modern town.

Whether it reads as political satire, historical artefact, or just an unusually large piece of public art depends on where you stand. It is a peculiar object in a peculiar context, and the incongruity is part of its interest.
