Sitting at the southern end of the promenade where the valley begins to narrow, the Grandhotel Pupp has been operating in various forms since 1701, making it one of the oldest continuously run grand hotels in Central Europe. The current building dates mostly from the early 20th century, with a grand ballroom and a facade that announces itself from a considerable distance.
The hotel is active and expensive; you can eat in its restaurants and drink in its bar without staying. The position at the foot of the spa woods — the forest paths begin directly behind the building — makes it a natural starting point for the hillside walks above town. Even if the room rate is beyond your budget, walking to the end of the promenade to look back up the canyon at the town's accumulated architecture is a worthwhile 20-minute detour.
