The largest coherent castle complex in the world, according to the Guinness Book — 70,000 square metres of fortifications, palaces, gardens, and the soaring Gothic St Vitus Cathedral at its heart. Founded in the 9th century and successively rebuilt in every major European style, the castle has been the seat of Czech princes, Holy Roman Emperors, and — since 1918 — the president of Czechoslovakia and then the Czech Republic. The main circuit covers St Vitus, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica, and Golden Lane. Go early or late to avoid the cruise-ship crowds; watch the changing of the guard at noon.
