Christianso Church

The island's small whitewashed church, built into a fortress wall

The little parish church sits at the northern end of Christianso, a whitewashed building with a red-tiled roof tucked against the inner wall of the old fortress. It dates from the early nineteenth century and was originally a guardhouse; the congregation came later, when the garrison was disbanded and the island found a quieter purpose.

The interior is plain — pale wood pews, a model ship hanging from the ceiling in the Danish coastal tradition, a small organ. Services are still held on Sundays for the hundred or so islanders. Drop in for ten minutes between the ferry's arrival and a herring lunch on the harbour.
