Frederiksberg is technically its own municipality within the Copenhagen metropolitan area — an enclave entirely surrounded by the city but governed separately. In practice it functions as an upscale residential quarter west of the city centre, defined by its large green spaces and the Frederiksberg Palace complex.
Frederiksberg Gardens (Frederiksberg Have) are the finest formal gardens in Denmark: terraced lawns descend from the 18th-century palace down to a canal system with rowing boats in summer. The gardens connect directly to Copenhagen Zoo on the southern edge, making this a natural half-day circuit for families. The surrounding streets are among the most sought-after residential addresses in Copenhagen — wide, tree-lined, and quiet in a way that the city centre never is.
The area has fewer tourist sights than Indre By but a good selection of neighbourhood restaurants and cafes along Gammel Kongevej and Frederiksberg Allé. It is an easy cycle or metro ride from the centre.
